Buying a Piano (FAQ)

  1. Should I buy a real piano or is an electric keyboard OK?
  2. Should I buy a new or used piano?

It depends on what you want to do with the piano and how much you want to spend. If you want a pristine, beautiful piece of furniture like a baby grand, expect to pay a lot of money. But if you want a space saving solid upright adequate for the kids to learn on, a mid priced second hand piano will do fine. New pianos are already in good shape - with used pianos, the most important question is whether it was well looked after and regularly tuned. Pianos hold their value if well cared for, just like your car. Always have a used piano checked out by a knowledgeable friend or by a professional tuner, who will often do this for a reasonable fee - much cheaper than buying a lemon!
